Longmont, CO (pop. 100,758) Longmont Power and Communications (LPC) is conducting a national search for a Safety and Training Manager with pay commensurate with experience.  Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) has been the City’s not-for-profit electric provider since 1912.  LPC is aspiring to make the transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030. This new position will also be the safety manager for the City’s internet service department, NextLight™, with internet speeds that are among the fastest in the nation 

Longmont is a home-rule municipality located in Boulder and Weld counties. Longmont is located northeast of the county seat of Boulder and 33 miles northwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver and only thirty miles from Rocky Mountain National Park. Longmont is home to multiple high-tech companies and boasts a vibrant restaurant scene. 

The Safety and Training Manager position will be located within the Electric Services Department, Power Delivery & Operations Division, and will assess, plan, develop, organize, coordinate, implement, and supervise safety training for the Electric (LPC) and Broadband (NextLight) office and field staff; administer the apprenticeship and department training programs; and manage the tree trimming and pole inspection programs, including the oversight of contractors.

Position Responsibilities   

  • Plan, develop, organize, schedule, implement, manage, and conduct safety programs and training for the Electric & Broadband Utilities.
  • Coordinate and provide technical input to Department safety committee.
  • Manage all elements of the Department and Divisional Safety Meetings.
  • Represent the Electric and Broadband utilities in the City safety committees.
  • Conduct safety audits, perform job hazard analysis and investigate accidents and injuries.  Prepare reports, maintain records, and present findings to Risk Management.   
  • Recommend and implement safety performance standards and evaluate effectiveness of safety programs.  Establish OSHA and EPA compliance standards and coordinate testing and certification schedules.  Provide recommendations to safety committees and Risk Management.
  • Coordinate the activities and documentation of the Apprentice Boards.  Maintain employee records and evaluations.  Manage the apprenticeship program, including all testing and field training.  Keep records for all Department of Labor and Northwest College up-to-date.
  • Participate in disaster planning, business continuity planning and remediation through the City of Longmont emergency response teams.
  • Assist Operations in emergency situations and during outages.
  • Manage the operations of the tree trimming program.  Monitor contractor activities and compliance with contracts.  Track program data including cost percentages for the Electric and Broadband utilities.
  • Manage the pole inspection program including monitoring contractor activities and reporting.
  • Manage all safety equipment including rubber gloves, sleeves, cover-up, hot sticks, protective grounds, and ladders. Coordinate testing and replacement of defective safety equipment.
  • Evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; recommend appropriate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action. Schedule employees, assign employees to projects, and review time sheets. 
  • Train, develop, guide and mentor employees toward improved performance in a manner consistent with City values and expectations.
  • Practice an inclusive supervisory style with people from a variety of backgrounds, ethnic or racial groups, age groups, personality styles, and genders. 
  • Build alliances, foster effective teamwork, and build constructive relationships within and between individuals and other work groups.
  • Demonstrate behavior that sets a positive example for integrity, fiscal responsibility, and professionalism.

Qualifications Required

  • Possession of an Electric Journey Lineworker certification is required and may be substituted for the educational requirement. 
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Risk Management or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of related utility industry experience with emphasis in safety, risk management and training.
  • Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s License (within 30 days of moving to Colorado if out-of-state candidate).

Candidate Preferences

  • Lead worker or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated skills/training in supervision

Compensation

Range: $55.55 - $61.73/hour ($115,544 to $128,398/yr.), depending on qualifications and experience.
