Manufacturing Engineer, Combustion Devices (Raptor)

The manufacturing engineer for Raptor production at SpaceX will utilize knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop, implement and optimize the production process for key sub-assemblies and components for the Raptor engine family. Work with passionate engineers to rapidly develop methods to achieve airline-like operations for the most powerful rocket engines in the world.


  • Develop the manufacturing and integration processes for combustion device components and assemblies in the Raptor engine family
  • Maintain a sense of ownership for all aspects of the engine including design, fabrication, and delivery schedule
  • Implement new manufacturing capabilities and think creatively to resolve and challenge obstacles
  • Define and optimize requirements, approaches, and processes based on measurement or test data
  • Drive design and process changes that support program goals, through demonstration of feasibility
  • Develop, demonstrate, and drive to completion innovative production processes to support high rate production targets
  • Work in an extremely fast paced environment and adapt to evolving design and production challenges
  • Resolve recurring manufacturing discrepancies and interface with quality team to implement corrective actions
  • Assist with design, analysis, and integration of combustion devices and associated assemblies to prove out new concepts, resolve off-nominal non-conformances, and develop sustainable repair procedures
  • Work closely with design/development engineers and fabrications shops (internal and external) to get parts built and assembled
  • Interact with engineers and technicians from all disciplines, including production, test, launch, and more on a daily basis


  • Bachelor€™s degree in an engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of industry experience with engine or fluid system design, development, fabrication, assembly, or test


  • 5+ years of industry experience with engine or fluid system design, development, fabrication, assembly, or test
  • Master€™s degree in mechanical engineering or aeronautical/astronautical engineering
  • Experience with thrust chambers, injectors, nozzles/nozzle extensions, or combustion devices
  • Ability to work in dynamic team environments with a great attitude in the face of extreme challenges
  • Expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly, successfully taking products through development, testing, and production
  • Experience in a medium/high-volume production environment
  • Experience with brazed assemblies and high temperature/aerospace alloys (molybdenum, Inconel, niobium, etc.)
  • Liquid rocket engine development experience and/or experience working with pressurized fluid components such as valves and/or pneumatic systems
  • Deep understanding of engineering fundamentals and the ability to perform basic analysis
  • Demonstrated track record of success in a rapidly growing, changing and highly technical environment - ability to act and execute in a scrappy, entrepreneurial manner against tight timelines and aggressive schedules


  • This is a hands-on position that may require standing for up to 4 hours a day and working directly with hardware on the floor
  • Able to stoop, bend, stand, and enter a confined space
  • Position may require long hours and weekend work
  • Must be willing to travel, up to 10%
