The National Electric Energy Testing, Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) has an open position for Director at its 20-acre Forest Park, GA campus.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to help expand NEETRAC’s highly respected brand as a provider of pragmatic research and testing services for the electric energy transmission and distribution (T&D) industry.

Located within the School of ECE at Georgia Tech, NEETRAC is a self-supporting membership-based Center with an approximate $4M annual budget. We currently have 38 members across North America including electric utilities, equipment manufacturers, and related industries in the electric energy delivery arena. The diverse interests of the Membership enable NEETRAC to provide a dynamic work environment with extensive interaction to address real world issues and opportunities. Services include medium and high voltage testing for distribution & transmission systems, mechanical testing, asset management analytics, quality assurance programs for transformers and cable, as well as custom testing programs for product qualification and development. 

Candidates for the position must have a solid knowledge of the electric utility industry, with a focus on the electric grid (general operations, design, and challenges). The Director heads both the strategic and operations leadership groups and therefore must be skilled in decision making, delegation, and collaboration. In concert with the leadership groups, the Director ensures the growth and maintenance of the facilities and that researchers have the resources needed to serve the NEETRAC membership. The position requires regular interface with our members so strong communication skills are needed to understand their research and testing needs with the goal of maintaining a steady flow of business for NEETRAC.

In collaboration with the NEETRAC leadership team, the Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Setting the overall research direction pursued by NEETRAC, both short and mid-term, in consultation with the NEETRAC membership and staff.

  • Leading the development of the organization by maintaining close contact with existing members, recruiting new members as appropriate, and identifying additional funding sources as appropriate.

  • Ensuring proper interaction and interface between NEETRAC’s operations and relevant offices within Georgia Tech and, when required, with the management of member and customer entities.  

  • Recruitment and development of qualified engineering, technical and administrative staff. 

  • Ensuring that required technological resources and physical facilities are available and maintained to fulfill NEETRAC’s mission. 

  • Monitor the financial health of the organization. 

  • Assuring that NEETRAC maintains a solid, relevant Quality Management  System.  

  • Speaking at industry forums, including NEETRAC’s Management Board Meetings, held three times a year.

Requirements

Senior Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist or Senior Extension Professional

  • A Master’s degree in a related field, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or

  • A Master’s degree in a related field, and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor’s degree, or

  • A Doctoral degree in a related field, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree.

Principal Research Associate/Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in a related field, and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or

  • A Doctoral degree in a related field, and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a bachelor’s degree. 

Final rank will be determined commensurate with education and experience.


Skills

Ideally, a candidate for Director will have:

  • Electric utility experience, either for a utility, contractor, or manufacturer/supplier

  • Some knowledge of utility systems design, construction, and operations; laboratory operations or product design

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in a related engineering or technical discipline

  • An advanced degree such as Masters / Ph.D. / MBA (MBA is a plus)

  • 5 years of management experience as a department head or higher

  • Sales/business development experience

  • Some experience interfacing with organizations such as academic or government institutions is a plus

Other Information

This position is an appointment for a period of five years with a review of performance annually. The position may be reappointed for another five-year term or the position may choose to transition to a research engineer/scientist position at the end of the term, should the person in the position have the appropriate qualifications.
