The Apprentice Lineman is a learning position and receives on-the-job training, working under close supervision, to develop the knowledge, ability and other qualifications to perform the duties of a Journeyman Lineman. The Apprentice Lineman will perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of the electric distribution system. This position involves working with various voltages of electricity.

The Journeyman Lineman provides construction and maintenance of SDCEA’s distribution, transmission, and regulatory systems in accordance with SDCEA and regulatory directives and policies. This position involves working with various voltages of electricity.

The successful candidate will receive paid health and life benefits for self and family, including company contributions to a health savings account. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Constructs and maintains the system’s distribution, transmission lines and regulatory equipment as directed by the Working Foreman or Lead Lineman and per specifications of SDCEA, RUS and pertinent electrical and safety codes.

Responds to outage reports; locates and repairs the reasons for the outages.

Maintains tools, equipment, transportation, and protective gear and informs foreman when replacement of such is needed. Observes and reports to foreman any hazards or potential hazards on the system.

Operates transportation and other equipment used to accomplish the work. Accounts for materials and equipment used.

Other Responsibilities

Deals with consumers, vendors, contractors and other employees in a cordial, business-like manner to maintain positive public relations within and outside of SDCEA.

Treats all consumer and personnel information as confidential.

Complies with all SDCEA policies and procedures.

Required to perform other duties as assigned.

Expected to work extra hours as workload or emergency situations require.

Requirements

Must be a 3rd or 4th-year Apprentice or a Journeyman Lineman and must have hotline work experience.

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug test. All SDCEA employees may be subject to periodic random drug testing.

Progression through an adequate apprentice lineman program (normally four years) is required.

A valid First Aid, CPR and AED certification must be maintained.

Must develop proficiency in the operation of and understand the hazards of all equipment used.

Must develop a working knowledge of safe use of all materials and supplies pertinent to construction and maintenance of the system, including hot line equipment.

Understands the use of all tools and equipment needed to work on energized lines of voltages used in the system.

Must possess the ability to perform pole top rescue, resuscitation, and artificial respiration techniques in accordance with SDCEA, CREA and other applicable requirements.

Must be able to practice proper radio communication procedures and Mayday Procedures.

Must be able to work productively independently or cooperatively with others in a team.

Must possess written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills at the level required to successfully perform the essential responsibilities of the position.

Must be able to operate office machines, computers and associated programs at the level required to successfully perform the essential responsibilities of the position.

Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License. SDCEA, at its sole discretion, may allow the apprentice lineman to attain a Commercial Driver’s License after initial employment.
