The core function of the Reliability Operator is to monitor the transmission system to ensure reliability, identify real-time conditions that may lead to widespread outages, and coordinate corrective actions while complying with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and PJM standards. The Reliability Operator is responsible for being able to perform the duties of the Senior Transmission System Operator with the additional responsibility of interfacing with PJM, conducting contingency analysis, and reliability analysis of transmission system. This position has the responsibility and authority to implement real-time actions to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System, alleviate Operating Security Limit violations, directing restoration of load shed after Emergency events, monitoring voltage and reactive power flows and utilizing reactive resources to maintain voltage schedules, perform special operating studies, prepare reports, monitor the state estimator model solutions, perform real-time contingency analysis, and maintain system voltage profile. The Reliability Operator also has a leadership role in coordination with the shift manager driving the department mission and vision, training, mentoring, and coaching others.

Note: This is an on site position at our Lombard IL location. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.

Primary Duties
  • Maintain system voltages, line and equipment loadings within acceptable limits.
  • Follow established policies, procedures and guidelines on the transmission and distribution system operations. Maintain the system integrity, reliability and security of the transmission and distribution system, including all associated substation equipment in a safe, reliable and efficient manner.
  • Monitor EMS for abnormal Data Quality readings, dispatch field personnel to investigate and/or contact EMS Support Group.
  • Run day ahead load studies (Max and Min) and compare them with PJM study results (Transmission Log). Resolve any discrepancies between the two results.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities when necessary and also be responsible for training, mentoring, and coaching others.
  • Compile switching routines within system loading and system configuration parameters and provide guidelines to ensure proper clearance for switching requests. Develop and provide emergency switching plans based on last contingencies.
  • Run Study Security Analysis for future jobs, monitor Event Summary display, PJM eDart Transmission Owners Report, and PJM eDart Generation Reports "Owners Report.
  • Review OPB Outage letters or Equivalent Engineering Study Results.
  • Coordinate schedule switching jobs and system issues with Transmission Desk & PJM.
  • Keep Shift Managers informed of abnormal system conditions, major customer outages and equipment related problems.
  • Maintain operating log, interruption reports and associated records to accurately record system status and sequence of events.
  • Gather and analyze system data to determine the feasibility of switching requests. Verify the safe and efficient operation of the electrical system.
  • Required to monitor Dashboard and respond per appropriate procedures.
  • Ensuring no actual overloads exist on the system and no contingency would result in a monitored facility exceeding its emergency rating.
Job Scope

The reliability operator is responsible to ensure the system is operated in a manner which protects the reliability of the bulk electrical system including the following: Ensuring no actual overloads exist on the system and no contingency would result in a monitored facility exceeding its emergency rating. Maintaining system voltage in accordance with established limits. Coordinating with PJM to implement any operating instruction necessary to preserve the safe, reliable operation of the bulk electric system. Proactively monitoring study results to identify any potential areas of concern and initiating corrective actions. Coordination with the SSO for each impacted operating company to address system issues. In addition, the Reliability Operator has a leadership, mentoring, training, and coaching responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business or job related technical field and a minimum of 8-10 years experience with at least 5 years combined experience as a Senior Transmission System Operator, Transmission System Operator II and/or Transmission System Operator I, with no less than 1 year at the Senior Transmission System Operator level.
  • Or an Associates degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business or job related technical field and a minimum of 10-12 years experience with at least 5 years combined experience as a Senior Transmission System Operator, Transmission System Operator II and/or Transmission System Operator I, with no less than 1 year at the Senior Transmission System Operator level.
  • Or an High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 12-14 years experience with at least 5 years combined experience as a Senior Transmission System Operator, Transmission System Operator II and/or Transmission System Operator I, with no less than 1 year at the Senior Transmission System Operator level.
  • Thorough Understanding of the Exelon Transmission and Distribution System, the ability to recognize system configuration and loading issues, ability to formulate contingency plans, and thorough knowledge and understanding of proper operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and manage stressful situations
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Senior Transmission Operator Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the work activity of others and serve as a mentor.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business or job related technical field.
  • Knowledge of contingency analysis and reliability analysis of the transmission system.
  • Experience operating multiple companies

  • Annual salary will vary based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $110,400.00/Yr. – $151,800.00/Yr.
